Online Registration for Special 20th TD Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race Set for March 9 and 10

Cape Elizabeth residents kick off registration on March 9, followed by general public on March 10 and a lottery for remaining spots

CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine (January 10, 2017) – Runners who want to be in the field for the special 20th TD Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race on Aug. 5 first need to be in the zone and at the ready on March 10 for the quickest online registration in road racing.

Registration for the TD Beach to Beacon, a classic American summer road race founded by Olympic gold medalist Joan Benoit Samuelson, is set to begin for the general public at 7 a.m. ET sharp on Friday, March 10.

Online registration for 2017 TD Beach to Beacon 10K set for March 10.

Last year all 4,000 slots allotted to the general public were filled online in a record three minutes, 43 seconds (3:43). Expect that record to be tested in 2017, especially with heightened excitement surrounding the 20th edition of the popular event. Host Cape Elizabeth residents will be allowed to register for 600 slots at 7 a.m. ET on Thursday, March 9.

Race organizers are advising runners to be prepared to fill out the registration form as quickly as possible.

"While you don’t have to be fast to run the TD Beach to Beacon 10K, you do have to be fast to register, as is proven year after year,” said Race President Mike Stone. “Everyone who wants to assure themselves of a place at the starting line needs to be alert, nimble and ready to go when the proverbial horn sounds on March 10.”

A lottery for the 1,950 remaining slots will take place from March 10 through March 19, with lottery entrants announced on March 21. Runners register at the race website, www.beach2beacon.org. The race entry fee is $50.

Here is the complete TD Beach to Beacon 10K registration schedule:

  • Thursday, March 9 at 7 a.m. ET: online registration opens for Cape Elizabeth Residents only. First come, first serve. Limit of 600.
  • Friday, March 10 at 7 a.m. ET: online registration opens to general public. First come, first serve. Limit of 4,000.
  • The remaining 1,950 spots will be distributed by lottery, which will begin immediately after online registration is closed. Participants can enter as an individual or as part of a team of up to six members. Registration for the lottery will be held from March 10 until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, March 19. The lottery drawing will be on March 21. The race will charge a $5 fee to enter the lottery. Winner’s names will be posted on the race website.
  • The race will allow transfers from April 1 through June 30. The race will charge a $5 transfer fee. Cape Elizabeth residents registered in the 600 entries allocated to Cape Elizabeth residents can only transfer to another Cape Elizabeth resident.

Online registration for 2017 TD Beach to Beacon 10K set for March 10.

After the transfer period ends on June 30, runners may not exchange bibs or run under another person’s bib or they will risk banishment from the race for future years.

Detailed registration information is available at http://www.beach2beacon.org/2017-registration.

After registration for Cape residents, the general public and the lottery is complete, the remaining bibs will be set aside for world-class athletes, sponsors and charities. Also, the “Legacy” runners who have participated in every TD Beach to Beacon will be invited to register beginning March 1.

In addition, the race’s 2017 beneficiary, to be announced soon, as well as past beneficiaries will make bib numbers available to runners in exchange for fundraising and/or support. The race’s charity bib program has helped Maine charities raise more than $1.5 million over the history of the event.

Online registration for 2017 TD Beach to Beacon 10K set for March 10.

Online registration for the Kids Fun Run – set for Friday, Aug. 4 at Fort Williams – will begin March 15 and continue through June 30, however, parents can also register their children at the Expo on Thursday, Aug. 3 (4-8 p.m.) and on Friday at the Kids Fun Run event, beginning at 4:30 p.m.

The TD Beach to Beacon draws runners from throughout the region and the world to picturesque Cape Elizabeth. The race begins near the Crescent Beach entrance on Route 77, winds along tree-lined streets and past breathtaking ocean vistas, and ends in Fort Williams Park at the historic Portland Head Light, the most photographed lighthouse in the world.

In 2016, 6,332 runners from 15 countries, 43 states and more than 265 Maine cities and towns finished the winding, rolling, often breathtaking 6.2-mile coastal course. Thousands of spectators cheered runners along the route and at the finish, and more than 800 volunteers helped ensure a smooth operation. The race debuted in 1998 with 2,408 runners crossing the finish line.

More than $90,000 in prize money is awarded to the top finishers and place winners in the various categories for men and women, and a separate $30,000 donation is provided each year by the TD Charitable Foundation to the race charity.

The TD Beach to Beacon 10K is directed by Dave McGillivray of DMSE Sports (www.dmsesports.com), who also directs the B.A.A Boston Marathon and is regarded as one of the best in the business.
