TD Beach to Beacon Sports Medicine Symposium Next Thursday Open to Public

Annual pre-race event on July 31 to feature a “Heart to Heart” talk with Race Director Dave McGillivray, recently diagnosed with coronary heart disease

PORTLAND, Maine (July 24, 2014) – The medical team for the TD Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race is conducting a Sports Medicine Symposium on Thursday (July 31) aimed at runners, medical personal and anyone interested in wellness.

The free symposium, which helps kick off race weekend, will take place at the Dana Center Auditorium at Maine Medical Center from 5 to 8 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

Runners receiving post-race massages at 2013 TD Beach to Beacon 10K Road Race in Cape Elizabeth, Maine.

Speakers include TD Beach to Beacon Race Director Dave McGillivray, who was recently diagnosed with coronary heart disease and will talk “Heart to Heart” about how the experience changed his life and also provide advice to others. In addition, Kate Anagnostis, a licensed massage therapist who was part of the massage team at the Athens Olympics, will discuss the benefits of deep-tissue massage for athletes at all levels, including recreational runners.

Dave McGillivray – “Heart to Heart” (5:30-6 p.m.)

  • Dave McGillivray is a U.S.-based race director, philanthropist, author and athlete. Race director of the TD Beach to Beacon and the B.A.A. Boston Marathon, Dave and his team at DMSE, Inc. have organized numerous mass participatory fundraising endurance events since he founded it in 1981.

Kate Anagnostis ATC, LMT – “Massage Keeping You in Motion” (6-6:30 p.m.)

  • Kate Anagnostis, ATC, LMT is the head athletic trainer at Mt Ararat HS and a licensed massage therapist who has traveled internationally as part of the massage team for the Athens Olympics.

Jeffrey Brown, MD – “Crisis Management in Race Medicine” (6:30-7 p.m.)

  • Jeffrey Brown, MD is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. Outside of his private practice, Dr. Brown is the psychologist for the Boston Marathon medical team and is on Runner’s World magazine’s scientific advisory board.

Michael Baumann, MD – “Preparation is Key - The B2B Medical Tent—What to Expect” (7-7:30 p.m.)

  • Michael Baumann, MD is an attending physician at Maine Medical Center and is the Chief of Emergency Medicine. He has been a medical director of the TD Beach to Beacon 10K since 2009.

The medical tent at the TD Beach to Beacon brings together physicians, EMTs, nurses and other medical professionals from across the region who volunteer their time to provide top-notch medical care to runners. The Aug. 2 event marks the 17th year for one of the country’s iconic road races. In 2013, a record setting 6,244­­­­­­ runners from 16 countries, 39 states and more than 250 Maine cities and towns finished the scenic 6.2-mile course.
